Driver´s Handout

Re-issued November 1968

Reproduced with the kind permission of John Down, Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway

The Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway was fortunate to be allocated a class 205 DMU unit, in June 2005 and took the DMBS and DTCL from unit 205018, though the trailer car came, originally, from unit 205 029. This mismatch came as a result of involvement in the Cowden incident.

One of the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway´s members, Arthur Llewellyn, lent me his copy of the Driver´s Handout document (I´ve no idea from where he obtained it). This document attempts to reproduce it. The original document appears to be very much a superset of the ´Training Notes´ document, and, in my view, is very, very much more useful.

There are manuscript changes and notes on the diagrams on pages 37, 45 and 57. I have deliberately not made any attempt to edit these out. Certainly the diagram on page 37 is not an accurate replica of 205 018, in either original or marked up form. The obliterated legend on the thermostat on the diagram on page 57 I believe reads HWT and is presumably the engine water thermostat. Treat both markups and the original diagrams with circumspection, I´m quite sure, for example that the cleaner´s switch shown in the diagram on page 61 does not have one end dividing the contactor between it contacts and the blow-out coil!

After experimenting, it was considered preferable to present the original pages as GIF images ´warts and all´ so that none of the original text is lost or corrupted. A PDF file would be rather smaller (about 35% smaller), but few people have the facilities to ´manipulate´ such documents. (perhaps some kind soul might consider OCR-ing the files).

Although the notes were produced by British Railways, it is no longer clear in whom the copyright is vested, and no serious attempt has been made to determine who it might be. Copyright is however acknowledged and thanks are offered to who ever holds the copyright. This copy is made with no attempt to secure financial gain, and is offered to others on the same basis.
